Thanksgiving fun

27 Nov

So its been a busy few days for the Garcia family.  We have been spending our Thanksgiving weekend in Kansas City KS (well technically Overland Park but who outside of locals would know where that is?)  with my mom’s family.  The drive down was long but fortunately mostly uneventful. We did have a one challenge but it was minor … the driver’s side window in our van has an attitude and will occasionally not want to roll up after you roll it down.  Its power so we can’t just crank it up like you had to back in the day.  So I hadn’t driven our van in a while and when we stopped for dinner and went through the drive through (like usual … ugh ) I of course rolled down the window and wouldn’t ya know it decided to be a pain and not roll back up.  now this wouldn’t have been a huge deal had it been 70 degrees out but it was more like 35 and rainy … real fun for a window down on the interstate.  so my husband and I proceeded to help the window go up by pulling the physical window up for about 30 minutes and that at least got it up to the point where it was only open about 5 inches … I wanted to just get going at that point so it was tolerable with the heat on so we left and dealt with lots of road noise for the next couple hours till we stopped again and repeated the process and finally got it all the way up.  It was pretty annoying at the time (when I’m on a long drive I don’t like stopping much cause I just want to get there) but looking back at it there could have been much worse things that could have happened in the driving conditions we were in on one of the busiest travel days of the year!

I’m sure most of you have been spending time being thankful for what blessings you have in your life over the last few days and I have as well.  The biggest thing that comes to my mind this year is that I have my husband here with me to celebrate thanksgiving!  Last year he was celebrating across the world in the country of Iraq while he was serving our country in the Army.  We were able to use Skype to chat and have him participate in some family festivities but I am much more excited to have him here live and in person vs a cardboard cut out and a computer screen!  I’m also grateful that I have a fantastic family who all loves each other and gets along!  I have been very blessed to be brought up in a very close knit family who all loves and cares for each other.  That is becoming more and more rare this day in age and I don’t for a second take my blessings in that area for granted!  The list can go on forever but I’m sure you don’t want to read about my mushy feelings right now …

One note for those of you who have a link to my page saved (and if you don’t you should 😉 )  My brother in law has been working on getting my website for my shop all set up and my blog will be linked into it once everything is all set up and good to go … the link at that point is going to change to  it will make it easier for people to remember and they don’t have to worry about the ‘wordpress’ when they type it in 🙂  and the best part is I can sell my creations on the page without fees from etsy!  I am also planning on having fabric for sale very soon!  If any of you have suggestions on the types of fabric or designers that you would be most interested in PLEASE let me know!  I’m very excited to have the ball rolling more on my shop and I’m looking forward to serving all of you out there in cyberland.  anyways once my site is up and running I will put up another post and let you know its all official so you can get it changed but for the mean time just know its coming 🙂

Well we are doing pictures this morning with Christian and my nieces and I need to go get Christian ready so I gotta run.  Hope you all have a great day!

Does anyone else find themselves doing this?

23 Nov

So I have learned something about myself … I hoard fabrics that i really like … even if i bought it to make something for myself.  I had bought a Jelly Roll of “frolic” by Sandy Gervais and i LOVE IT!!!  I also had some yardage that I bought specifically for an apron out of the same line but I had some left over.  about a month and a half ago I started to make a purse for myself out of it but then didn’t get it finished the night I started (which is actually unusual cause i would rather stay up till 5am to finish something than leave it un finished … ) The next time I got it out to work on it I found myself not wanting to use up any more of the fabric I had left to finish it … Its just so pretty when you buy it … so long story short the purse and fabric stayed in my “to finish” drawer for a while.  I knew it was there so it wasn’t like i forgot about it like i have done with many projects in the past, but I just couldn’t bring myself to cut up the rest of the pretty fabric I had left … Does anyone else out there do this?  really?  I would love to hear from you if you do!  I’m sure there are those of you out there!

Well this weekend gave me the perfect excuse to finish my purse … I was at a conference for the weekend and on sunday when I had my pink purse under my chair someone who was sitting close to me spilt coffee and it got all over the bottom of my purse … its not a huge deal cause I can throw it in the wash (I love quilted purses for that reason!!!) but I hadn’t gotten there yet and I have been carrying the contents of my purse in a plastic laundry bag from the hotel we were in … and thats just not that cute if you ask me … or any other human being for that matter … so finally last night i forced myself to finish the purse and I had to tell myself over and over that I’m making something for myself so I’ll get to look at the fabric all the time 🙂  So here is the result of getting over my fabric hoarding for a night 🙂

When I was trying to take the picture of my purse Christian was trying to get in the picture … so I figured I would just take a picture with him holding it …

The pose was all him … I didn’t tell him to put his hand on his face … he is such a ham!  I love my buddy 🙂

Anyways That is the most recent project … I have done a few other things but I’m not sure how I’m going to reveal them yet … I created something for a friend of mine and its totally original and I haven’t decided if i’m going to try to publish a pattern or see what the process for getting a patent or something for it … but its really cool and everyone who saw it after I gave it to my friend LOVED it so i’m sure its going to be released soon 🙂

Well with that I’m off … I need to pack up my sewing room to take it with me on my thanksgiving road trip … my mom’s family gets together every year for thanksgiving thru the sunday after and celebrates thanksgiving and christmas together because her parents snowbird to florida … this year we are going to Kansas City and I have a TON of things I still need to get done so I’m just going to spend Friday sewing instead of shopping … I don’t really enjoy the shopping maddness all that much and I don’t really have anything i HAVE to get that day so I would just assume be productive than fight crazy people!  So with that I will talk to you all soon!

Remember don’t eat too much this week … you will regret it when the new year comes around and you feel like you have to loose all the pounds you put on! … oh wait I need to remember that one … sorry for the un asked for advise 😉

Back to creating :)

17 Nov

well after a weekend away from home and little time the previous week sewing, I am finally back in the swing of things with creating.  I must admit i felt quite lost being away from my sewing machine for so long.  whats really scary is I have quite a list of things I need to get done and not much time on my schedule to get them done!  I’m going to be gone for a long weekend again this weekend and then next week is thanksgiving!!!  I can’t believe its going to be officially Christmas season soon!  Even though Christmas stuff is EVERYWHERE already I try to not think of it as the ‘Christmas Season’ till after thanksgiving.  I think from now on I’m going to have to adjust my thinking since I’m in the business of selling and creating things … oh well….

speaking of creating … well still that is … I have been getting things done 🙂  I finished 2 purses for friends of mine … they have been on my list for a long time and i’m very glad i got them done!  I also got 2 activity bags made for my friends daughters.

I have also been working on an organizer for another friend of mine to go in her purse … thats been a little more complicated but its been a fun process.  Its a totally original design and I hope to get a pattern available at some point once i work out all of the bugs and get it the way i want it.   Once its ready for purchase I will let you all know 🙂  I will also get photos of the organizer up soon as well … its not quite done yet so you will just have to wait and see … 🙂

On a follow up note from my last post … Steven and I had a wonderful weekend at our marriage conference!  We both learned a ton of stuff and now we are doing our best to apply them … of course that is always the tough part though 😉  Many of the things we heard at the weekend we had heard before, but from a different perspective so it was great to hear things a little differently!

Well thats all for now I need to get some sleep.  Goodnight Bloggland

Weekend to Remember

12 Nov

Well this weekend is going to be a fun weekend for my hubby and I.  We are going to a marriage conference called A Weekend to remember put on by Family LIfe.  My parents and grandparents decided that after my hubby was gone for a year on his deployment to iraq it was probably a good thing for us to go to a conference to help us learn how to have a healthy marriage again … and I agree … if you haven’t ever had a spouse away for that long its hard to explain, but I had no idea how much things would change and how difficult the adjustments would be.  don’t get me wrong i’m not complaining i’m just stating how it is … I have had a pretty good attitude about it and realize that its all a part of our journey through this life, but its been more than i expected.  so thanks mom and dad and grandma and grandpa for the gift  it is much appreciated!  and i’m sure i’ll be even more grateful after the weekend!

as far as the sewing and quilting has been going for me its been slow 😦  i was out of town for a 5 day weekend (friday through tuesday night) last weekend and now i’m out of town again so i only have spent one day in my sewing room over the last week … its tragic i know … though i did manage to get some stuff done … i finally finished 2 purses that have been on my to do list for a LONG LONG time … like middle of the year long time … so i am very glad that i have gotten them done!  now i just need to get them in the mail!  oops i guess that will have to wait till monday …

so needless to say i’m missing my sewing machine, but i have been thinking up a bunch of ideas for gifts for christmas etc and i very much look forward to working on them!  well for now i need to go cause i have to get ready for our first session tonight 🙂  have a good one everyone!

Happy Veteren’s Day!

12 Nov

Well today is veteren’s day (well technically it was yesterday cause its after midnight but i’m still up)  I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all of my fellow veterans and military families.  If it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t have the freedoms that we have today in this fantastic country!  Thats all I have for today … short and sweet 🙂

Fall is here …

5 Nov

Well as much as I hate to admit Fall is here.  That means not just cold temperatures but also Thanksgiving is around the corner!  I felt it necessary to make a wall hanging for the season …

The dowel rod isn’t the prettiest so i’ll be changing that soon but I wanted to get this hung up soon since its going to be thanksgiving before we know it!

I also have been busy making other things as well (really would I just work on one thing … nope … )  My mother in law’s birthday was last month and she had been wanting me to make her a purse that she saw at a local quilt shop so I got around to makin it for her birthday … even though it was a little late …

This bag was fun to make, though I was following a pattern so it wasn’t as fun as something I designed by myself … but I really enjoy the way it turned out!  I was particularly surprised at how much I LOVE the fabric I used … it is ‘butterfly garden’ by Kansas Troubles … I typically am not drawn to this designer, but my mother in law specifically wanted this color scheme so of course I got what she wanted … but after working with it I LOVE this line and color combination!  the pattern was not too difficult but of course it took longer to put together since i wasn’t just putting something together out of my head … I don’t particularly like using patterns … actually i don’t like using them at all … I like to look at a finished produce and reverse engineer it … maybe thats just the way i learned and so its easier for me that way, but it is what it is … I am in the process of making a bag with this pattern for another friend of mine but instead of using a jelly roll I have 6 different fabrics so there will be some repeats in the fabric colors … i’ll put up a picture of it once it is done …

Finger Update

well my finger is almost totally healed … the finger nail fell off last night (well i pulled it off cause it was almost off)  and its already growing back … and the open part on the side of my finger is almost totally healed up … there is just a small scab that is left!  the sensation is still strange but i think thats going to be permanent since i did nerve damage but i have been getting used to it … the way it looks is almost normal now too … well about as normal as it is going to look anyways … i have full use of it now and as long as i don’t smack it on anything it doesn’t hurt … of course if i smack it on stuff it hurts, but it would hurt even if i didn’t cut the tip off …

one more thing before I wrap up for today I  will be in a vendor fair in Lindenhurst Park Dist. gym (Lindenhurst IL) on Dec 6th from 11-4 Please stop by and see what I have to offer if you are in the area! I would love to see who all reads my blog and meet them in person!  I am sure some of you are out of state but if there are any of you in the Chicagoland area i would LOVE to meet you!!!  I’ll be putting up reminders on here from time to time till the event as well.

I think thats all for now … Hope all is well with everyone!

Remember don’t eat all of your halloween candy at once … it will give you a tummy ache!
