Trying this from my iphone …

30 Sep

So I’m just trying to see how easy this is to post from my iPhone … If it’s not too tough you will be hearing from me much more frequently, though the grammar may not be as good … Oh well …
So I made another purse tonight and I’m super excited cause I can get 4 out of one jelly roll and only 1/2 yard for the lining with pockets! And I made a cosmetic bag that only takes a few short strips and so I can get 4 of them out of the same jelly roll!!! How cool is that 4 purses and 4 coordinating cosmetic bags out of a jelly roll and 2 yes of fabric and 4 zippers! Talk about efficiency and very little waste! I love it! I think I added the pic but if not I’ll add it tomorrow from my laptop .., anyways I’m exhausted cause it’s 3am so I’m gonna sign off for now! Night!

Black and White and Red all over …

29 Sep

And no I’m not talking about the news paper.  I made a handful of tops yesterday and two were table runners with a black and white charm pack I have had for a while.  I made one with white and one with red.  I really like the way they both turned out, and they look so different with just the change in background color! I decided to wait on the quilting of them because I woke up sore from quilting the let it snow wall hangings the other night … I forgot that when you free motion quilt you use muscles that you don’t use when strait stitching … and I need to do more of it so that I get used to it.  Speaking of the let it snow wall hangings, when I was finishing them up I tried something that I saw on someone else’s blog … I wish I knew where I saw it, but I don’t remember … sorry 😦  I saw someone take the hair clips that snap back and forth into place and use those to hold the binding into place … now this may be common practice in the quilting community, but I hadn’t heard of it till just recently … but it works like a charm!  and added bonus you don’t have to worry about those loose pins floating around to poke yourself or step on!!! I also made some place mats (minus the quilting still) that turned out pretty cute.  I decided to go through my boxes of random fabric and I found some super cute fat quarters that I forgot about and so I made some strips and tossed them together real quick.  One more fun thing that I did yesterday was have my first ‘alterations’ job.  The girl who lives across the street needed cups sewn into her homecoming dress.  The dress is beautiful!  It wasn’t too difficult to do either … and it is fun to have that added to my list of things I have done/can do. Well thats about all for now … I’ll check in next time I have more projects done 🙂

I can’t believe I’m thinking about Christmas already …

28 Sep

Well I’m trying to get used to getting onto my laptop on a regular enough basis to put up posts frequently … I think I can do it from my phone to, I just have been to lazy to try to figure it out so far … anyways … so here I am again almost a week after my last post, but hey it could be worse.   So today I started to work on some Christmas projects … yes I did say Christmas … although if you are a crafter or a quilter you probably already have been thinking about it as well.  This, however, is the first year, since I have been an adult and outgrown the childlike giddiness, that I have intentionally thought about Christmas before Thanksgiving.  To allow myself to ease into it though I didn’t make a specifically Christmas project though it was more a ‘winter’ project.  Its a simple wall hanging that says ‘let it snow’ on it.  I actually made 4 of them because I am going to have them in a sale in October but its all the same thing.  I think they turned out pretty well myself.

The photo turned out a little blurry because I took it on my phone and didn’t see it on the computer till just now, but it gives you an idea of what it looks like.  I love using fusible web to do appliqué projects because it makes things so much easier and you don’t have to use pins!!! no pins makes me happy … I will use them if I have to, but if I can do something without I don’t use them.   I know I know they make things much easier to stay accurate, but I seem to find that I can be pretty accurate without them for the most part and then I don’t worry about sewing over them by accident or dropping them and not realizing it till I end up with a pin a couple inches into the flesh of my foot (and yes that has happened … not fun!) anyways I’ll get off my soap box about pins now lol …

A few days ago I got the itch to make a table runner using the quilt as you go method that I saw on a you tube tutorial by the Missouri Star Quilt Company.  If you haven’t checked out their site you should!  I have learned probably at least half of what I have learned online from these amazing gals!  And they also are the most friendly group you will ever meet.  I was passing through their area last year and of course had to swing by and they treated me so well and even gave me an extra discount on my purchase just cause I came from so far away!!!  Really they are great!  So the project I made was with a jelly roll and I don’t remember the name of it off hand but its super adorable.   The table runner turned out great too.  I ended up using some of the left over strips for the binding because I hadn’t done a pieced binding and I wanted to see if I liked it or not and turns out I do 😉

I even have over half of the Jelly Roll left so I can either make more table runners like this or I can do something different with it.  I haven’t decided yet.  Any ideas?

I also was getting the itch for a new cute bag the other day and I had a charm pack that I won online forever ago staring at me to make something with.  So I decided I would make a tiny bag to throw my yoyo project stuff in so that I don’t have to have it in a zip lock bag in my purse … Its much cuter in this bag!  I wanted to put a zipper on it, but I didn’t have one on hand and I was too lazy to go to the store and get one … really I knew if I went to the store I would end up buying much more than the zipper I came for and that would make my hubby not so thrilled with me … so it just has handles on it for now.  I’m going to try to see if I can put a snap or clasp or button of some sort on it without makin it look jankety so it will close better, but we will see.

If the charm pack would have had more squares in it (this pack only had 16) I would have made it bigger, but this works good for what I wanted it to do … and its much more adorable than a plane zip lock bag!

Well thats it for now … Hopefully I’ll manage to get on more frequently than once or twice a week from now on … We will just have to see … I will be making more fun Christmas projects in the near future … Some of the projects may be original too who knows … we will just have to wait and see 😉  I have lots of ideas in my head and I’ve already been putting a bunch of them on paper … once they start to get put together I’ll show ya!

Remember … smile at people … it can change someone else’s day for the better and it will make your day better too 😉

iPhone adventures and YoYos …

23 Sep

So my iPhone has been crazy on the fritz lately … most likely because it has been dropped a few too many times (one time is too many … but hey who hasn’t dropped their phone ever?)  but it had gotten to the point where it really didn’t function.  Fortunately for my bank account I have insurance on the phone so I just have a $50 deductible and I can get it replaced or fixed.  So thats what I spent the majority of the day doing yesterday.  I was pleasantly surprised at the fantastic customer service that I got from everyone that I talked to no matter what the company I was dealing with ( I was working with AT&T, Apple, and Country Financial)  I had to jump through about 40 thousand hoops but we finally came to the conclusion that I needed to go to the Apple store to have them look at the phone.  Oh darn the Apple store … I’m sure there isn’t anything to keep my occupied or anything to drool over in that store … ha!  If I had to choose between a shopping spree in an Apple store or a quilt shop it would be a tough decision … I honestly don’t know which I would choose if that gives you an idea about how I feel about Apple … Love them!   Anyways I digress … so last night we finally got to the Apple store at about 715 because we didn’t leave my parents till later than I had originally anticipated (but when do we ever leave on time now … really?)  Once we got there they let me know that they could replace the phone and get me all set up.  The people in that store are also quite amazing!  That is one thing about Apple … they know their stuff!  I was blown away at the things that they could do!  We got my phone all set up and all I had to do once I got home was re-sync it with my itunes and I was good to go!  The one gal that particularly made my day was Stephanie … She was officially the sweetest thing ever!  She was great with Christian which made things much smoother than him running around pulling things off the shelves!  We chatted about everything from skin care (cause she totally does not look her age!) to our move to AZ to army stuff and lots in between.  We chatted like we had known each other forever!  I’m definitely going to have to shoot her a call and get to know her better!  So we were there till about the time the store closed and we could have stayed longer talking if we didn’t want to leave, but Christian was tired and so were mommy and daddy for that matter!  So we took off on our hour plus long drive back home.  We did stop and get Sonic on the way though so that made things more tolerable.  Steven hasn’t had Sonic since he’s been home and he’s been wanting it forever so he was quite thrilled to have it!

So that was my adventures for yesterday … exciting huh?  well I dunno, but I enjoyed the day!  Today I was able to get reacquainted with my craft stuff!  I missed my sewing machine so much over the weekend that when I got home last night I went in and said hi to her and told her I missed her and would spend time with her soon!  Thats a little crazy, but I felt like I was going through withdrawal all weekend not having it with me!  So today I got back to my crafting and decided that I needed to cover a spot on one of my tote bags that I have.  It was a free bag that had a ton of random stuff in it from CEDA when Steven’s army unit came home from Iraq.  It had a big iron on thing on the pocket that I didn’t like so I decided to cover it.  One thing that I have been wanting to try is YoYos.  They always make things super fun and I bought a couple different sized YoYo makers this weekend so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try them out.  I think it turned out pretty good!

One project that I totally forgot to mention in this weekends post was that I finally finished the tying on my grandmother’s quilt that I have been working on for what seems like forever.  Really it has just been on my to do list and gets put back because I didn’t have a hard set deadline for it and I did for other things … I need to just set deadlines for myself so I don’t let things take this long to get done!  But the good thing is now all I have to trim and bind it and it is TOTALLY done!!!  Its not the cutest thing in the world, but there is a lot of sentimental value to it.  My grandmother’s grandmother made the quilt top.   Its a granny style quilt so its just a ton of random patches that don’t have any matching pattern to them what so ever.  It is totally scrappy looking, but thats the way they did it I guess and my grandma wanted me to make it to a quilt for her and so I did!

Anyways I think tomorrow I’m going to work on getting things up on my etsy shop and start my next project … who knows what all that will entail 😉  so till later stay positive … its a choice!

What a Weekend …

20 Sep

Well this was a good weekend … I got to spend time with family that I hadn’t seen in a LONG time … It was my Great Uncle Vaughn’s 90th birthday party (I mentioned this in my last post too) so I got to see that side of the family.  I don’t see my dad’s side of the family all that often as it is because of where they all live, but this was his extended family so we see them even more infrequently … it was a good time and I really enjoyed the time catching up with everyone.

That night I came home and was really tired so I tried to take a nap, but when I was laying down I was thinking about quilting (of course …) and a design for a fun quilt came to my mind … so needless to say the nap didn’t happen because I had to go write it down and figure out what I was going to do with it and which materials from my stash I wanted to use.  I decided that I’m going to finally part with my 2 Blush Layer Cakes and put them into a quilt … I love that fabric and hate to part with it, but whats the point in just keeping it in the cabinet?  So I ordered the rest of the fabric that I need to get the quilt made today (I had to look EVERYWHERE to find it cause its an older line and most people were sold out of it) and I’ll be getting started on it later this week 🙂  as soon as I start I’ll put up some pictures so you can see the progress 🙂

So Sunday my parents had an open house for their house that is for sale (http://wsteffen.champaign-homes.net  MLS: 2103057 address 10 Doane Dr Mansfield IL)  so we had to be out and about most of the day.  What a better thing to do than go to Jo-Anns and look around at stuff there.  I’m also going to be fixing a dress for my mom so I had a real reason to go, but I would have gone regardless 😉  So I was able to get some of the things I needed for my project I was just talking about as well as stuff to make the pencil skirt that I have been wanting to make for a while.  I also scored some super cute almost 1 yard remnant pieces of fabric that I’m going to use to make more aprons out of.  They are super cute and I look forward to getting the finished product posted as well.

We also went to BDubs for lunch yesterday so that we could watch the Bears beat Dallas so that was a fun time.  Then after we went home my sister and brother in law came over with their kids to pick up our van to use for a little bit.  They have a van, but it is having challenges so until they get it running they are going to use ours since we aren’t using it.  My two nieces are getting so stinkin big now!  Izzy and Christian played in the tub of rice and beans while we played with Addy (she’s only about 3 months old)

Well dinner is about ready so thats all I have for now … I’ll keep you updated with the new projects as I work on them!

apron fun

18 Sep

Well its been just a bit since my last post … sorry bout that … its been a little bit of a crazy week here in the Garcia home.  I’m actually making pretty good use of my time right now because I’m in the car with my parents (My dad is driving not me don’t worry) so instead of doing nothing I figured I would update my blog … My parents have an air card and I LOVE that I can use the internet anywhere!  We are on our way to a birthday party for my Great Uncle Vaughn.  He is turning 90 years old!!  Thats amazing!  Happy birthday Uncle Vaughn!!  We love you!

Anyways the most recent project that I have worked on is more aprons.  I put up a photo of a couple on my last post, but I made a few more and put more embellishments on them to make them more fun and cute.  My favorite one is the polka dot print

I really love the rick rack on the top and bottom hems and the pockets.  I made a couple that have more of a Christmas/Holiday flare to them as well

The last picture doesn’t show the colors too well … the rick rack is actually gold and the fabric is a more green color than is showing … I’m not sure why it looks like this, but it at least gives you the idea what it looks like.  I did make one more that didn’t have pockets because I didn’t want to have the print on print for this pattern and I didn’t have any other fabric that would match the colors, but oh well.

I was really surprised at how easy these were to make.  I’m probably going to try to make full aprons next and see how much more complicated they would be to make.  My in-laws are having a yard-sale today and these are for sale for $10 a piece.  I’m curious to see how they did.  My mother-in-law was super excited about trying to sell them (she is excited about selling anything I make which is good for me 😉 ) so I’m pretty certain that they will sell because when Esther sets her mind to something she WILL get it done.

On another fun note, I finally got my business cards in yesterday 🙂  and they are really cute!  I am going to have to make the font on them bigger next time because when I showed my dad he told me he about needed a magnifying glass to read half of the stuff on the card, but he also told me that his eyes aren’t in the greatest shape because of his age … he said it not me!  The moral of the story though is that I can finally give out my information when I meet people where before I wasn’t able to do that.

Another fun thing that I am planning on doing is making a pencil skirt for myself.  My friend was wearing the cutest skirt ever at a get together this week and I’m going to try to duplicate it (with a few changes of course) so that I can have one.  I have looked everywhere at the stores and can never seem to find one that I like or one that fits right, so I found a look that I like and I’m just going to make it myself to my own measurements.  Thats whats great about making my own clothing, I can custom make the size to fit EXACTLY how I want it to … I really wish I had a dress form that was my exact size and shape cause that would be easier than putting it on every single time I adjust something, but I’ll get over it lol … Once I get progress made on the skirt I’ll put up pics of that too!

Well I think thats about it for now … I think we are getting closer to our destination anyways.  I’ll chat with you all soon!

fun project of the day …

14 Sep

So i got the itch today to make something that I hadn’t made before … I wasn’t sure what I wanted it to be but I was feeling the creative juices flowing and new I had to do something with them.  I got out one of the patterns that I bought the other day (they were on sale for 1.99!!!)  and thought about making a vest to match my skirt that I had finished but I didn’t have everything I needed and didn’t really feel like using a pattern anyways (cause in my mind thats not creative its making something that someone else already made and following step by step instructions)  so after a little thinking and playing around in my crafting area my inlaws came home and Esther showed me an apron that she bought at an antique shop the went to today.  It was super cute but yet super simple and there was the inspiration for my creative outlet for the day 🙂  Even though its pretty much copying the same thing (like a pattern) I did change things up a bit and added my own flare to it so that it was different.  I used leftover fabric from a quilt that I just made for a friend of mine so I’m actually going to give her the apron since it matches the quilt … and she said she LOVED the  colors of the quilt so i’m sure she will love the apron as well.  I’m going to try to get pictures up of both the quilt and the apron if i can get the software figured out … so if you see pictures below that means I won the battle with my computer and if not … well … i’ll figure it out soon enough i’m sure … anyways … I did also decide that I would make a few more aprons with different fun material that I have in my stash and sell them at my inlaws yard sale that they are having this weekend … hopefully that will also be a good way for me to get my name out there … I just ordered business cards too so I am hoping that they show up before the yard sale so that I can put one with each item … we’ll have to see … I’m also trying to figure out how to make cozies for different sized energy drink cans … I don’t know about the rest of you out there, but i HATE it when my energy drink gets warm … even though the flavors of mine are really good (i drink xs energy drinks that are actually good for you and taste wonderful!)  they still aren’t good once they get warm … I worked on that for a little bit but I was starting to get tired so I’m going to pick up on that project later.  I think I have managed to get the photos to upload so we will see once I get my blog published … Can you tell I’m new at this?  the photo of the blue apron with the pink pockets is going to my friend jacquie because it matches a quilt I just made for her new baby girl.  The other apron is one I made to sell … and the welcome banner is something I made for a friend I went to HS with … BTW if you want me to make you anything just let me know and I can make it for you 🙂  anyways its officially late and I need to try to get some sleep so I can get up at a decent hour tomorrow … hope you all have a good one and i’ll be back soon!!!
